Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Blocks For Toddlers Ages 3+ Review

The toy market in 2024 is full of colorful, battery-operated toys for all age ranges, but for the parent looking for toy gifts for children 3 years or older some of the best toys that stand the true test of time are simple, “open-ended-play” building toys like this Melissa & Doug Standard Unit Solid-Wood Building Blocks With Wooden Storage Tray (60 pcs) Classic Wooden Blocks For Toddlers Ages 3+

This set is built to withstand hard and repeated usage and to handle a lot of stacking, falling, and washing. It helps to reduce kid’s screen time with “modular” playsets like this one from Melissa and Doug. Modular here means that play can continue even if some pieces are missing from the set.

Another big advantage with these toys is that you can infinitely expand on sets that your child loves – so, kids can use this set in combination with Lego sets, or Magna-Tiles, marble-run bridges etc. in unstructured play.

What others have said about this playset.

Karic says she was advised aby a preschool teacher that if a child could have only one toy, let it be wooden blocks. This set didn’t disappoint, she says. “The blocks are smoothly sanded and don’t feel cheap… I trust their company standards (M&D) way more than the knockoffs that are also sold here.”

“My child is 3 1/2 and was happy as a clam to receive this new surprise.” she added. And apparently, this Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Blocks For Toddlers Ages 3+ is worth the money: “Incredible price for wooden blocks!” says Karic. Read her full review here.

Annalea took time off to post a lengthy response to another reviewer who left some negative reviews – regarding the weight and smell of the wood, and that it was not hardwood, etc.

“Yes, these blocks do have a slight odor to them when the package is first opened,” Annalea wrote. “It's the finish they use, and it's not strong at all. I would guess it's some type of natural oil…”

As for the wood not being hardwood, "Not hardwood": Rubberwood is a hardwood. Not all hardwoods are as heavy as cherry or oak. Can you imagine how heavy this box would be if the blocks were made from a heavier hardwood?”
